The First Public School Building

In 1890 when the Weber County school system came into existence, a site south and across the road of the old meeting house was selected for construction of the first public school.  It was located at about 879 west on Pleasant View drive where the current City Park is now located.  This was actually the first building planned and erected exclusively for school purposes. It was constructed of red brick and had only one room.  As the community grew it was replaced by a larger four-room light brick building at the same location. As enrollment continued to increase, the first and second-grade classes were moved to the Farmers Union Building. These facilities, although inadequate, served the community for many years.

In 1937 when a newer and larger school was built in North Ogden for all students in North Ogden and Pleasant View the pleasant view buildings were dismantled and the property was deeded to the town for recreational purposes.

The first teacher and principal at the “Red Brick School’ was Wiley G. Cragun.  He was the only Pleasant View resident at the time to have graduated from the old University of Deseret. The 1903 graduating class included: Hyrum Cragun, Joseph Jensen, Friend Alvord, Alma Ellis, Bertha Packham, Fredrick Barker.  Their teacher was Lila Wade.
