the Rubin T. Rhees Family

The two-story red brick Victorian-style home built by Ruben T. Rhees, also known as the Honey King, was first constructed to scale in miniature to the smallest detail. The roof was removable so as to see the inside floor plans. When his wife approved the plans, construction began on the real thing. This was one of the first truly fine homes and for many years became a center for social gatherings.

Reuben Rhees bought his first swarm of bees from David John a fellow Pleasant View native in the fall of 1895 or 1896 for three dollars.  By the turn of the century, Ruben was producing 100,000 pounds of honey annually.  He owned 3500 colonies of bees and was president of the National Honey Producers Association.
